Description

The weather in Taos New Mexico had changed quickly in the past couple of weeks, from cold, to freezing with wind chill, and now surprisingly warm. It had made things interesting for those working out at the Taos Forest Horse site who never knew quite what to prepare for the next day. None of the workers however were upset about the increase in warmth as it meant easier riding conditions for the upcoming roundup.

A little over a month ago the first roundup had occurred and had been a terrific success. Bidders came from several stables, even from other countries, to view the Taos Forest Horses available. Now all of the horses had been safely transported to their new homes and images of them were flooding into the inbox of Caroline Richards. The enthusiasm for the breed had sparked the need to have another small roundup and this would also help them meet the quota set by the Bureau of Land Management for the number of wild horses captured each year.

During the last roundup too much had been happening at MLS for Caroline to go in person, this time however Wesley was staying behind to focus on Fawn and Peaches leaving Carol to oversee the process. She stood by the chute with her eyes on the foothills and a hand on her radio. Unlike several other wild horse projects MLS chose not to use helicopters for their roundups. For one it was far more difficult for helicopters to access the mountain terrain, and it also caused less stress on the horses.

Her radio crackled and a voice came through the speaker “This is Howard with Team 1, we’ve got a dozen coming towards you.”

Caroline and the others readied the corrals and braced themselves for the incoming horses. Eager to set eyes on the new horses for the roundup she grabbed her binoculars and focused on the trail she knew the team would be coming down. A few minutes of searching later she noticed the first flashes of color among the still dry or dead grasses and dirt.

“Here they are!” She announced to the others, though they had already spied the horses.

Carol set herself by the chute to document the incoming horses and monitor for any that she might want to hold for MLS. During the last roundup the staff of Meadow Lark Stables decided to hold off on taking in horses for their own herd due to a couple of planned purchases. However with the new horses completely paid for they could afford to bring in at least one TFH of their own.

The first few came thundering into the chute. A couple of chestnuts and the horse the worker’s called Nomad were among the first to hit the corrals. He was a strong looking stallion with a very interesting facial marking. Carol made a note to look at him. Another few flew through the chute and Cheryl marked down a couple of possible prospects. It was then that she saw her.

A beautiful grey mare galloped through the chute with a distinctive bloody shoulder and a powerful stride. Up to date there hadn’t been any Taos Forest Horses with that specific marking recorded by the workers or the scouts who rode up into the territory for fence maintenance. She was stunning. Carol quickly wrote down her markings to look for her later.

The roundup finished quickly for Carol, everything moved so fast once the teams started coming back it was all she could do not to get in the way. At the end she stood admiring the horses they had brought in, over 20 in all. Several of those were of the age that they would participate in the Feral Horse Control Project and be re-released but there were a good number of beautiful horses that could be auctioned.

As Carol was making a few last adjustments to her notes she glanced up at one of the nearby hills and spotted a loose horse standing atop it gazing at the corrals. It was a deep blood bay with very small bits of white from what Carol could see, and it was most certainly a stallion.

“Howard!” She called over her good friend, “Do you see that horse? Did one of the horses get loose?”

“Huh that’s odd. No, none of them got out or slipped by our wranglers. Do you want me to send out a team for him?”

“No that’s alright.” Carol replied, “We’ve met our quota for the day on horses, let’s leave him, just let me know if he causes any issues.”

The next day Carol caught sight of him again in the early morning standing near the corral and the grey mare was at the fence chuffing softly. Quietly Carol rested against the side of the house, trying not to make any movements and alert the stallion of her presence. Lipping the air the stallion took a few more hesitant steps down towards the corrals, his ears swiveling frantically for the sound of anything approaching. He only made it about 5 paces closer before the sound of a door opening echoed into the quiet morning and he broke back towards the mountains. The mare tossed her head back and let out a neigh after him.

From that morning on the first person up could catch a glimpse of him hanging as close as he dared to the corral with the bloody shoulder mare. Carol gave out the order to leave him be as his behavior had become something of a fascination for her. Each day she would wake early to try and spot him on the property. Even when spooked back he never strayed very far.

They had yet to transport the horses back to MLS as they were waiting for Adalia to make it up for the weekend and check all of the horses for any illness or injuries. Three mornings later they received word that she would be coming up later that afternoon. Around noon the wranglers prepared themselves to separate each horse from the herd and administer a mild sedative so the vet could safely work on them.

Almost precisely an hour later Adalia’s blue sedan came rolling down the long dirt drive. Carol grabbed her hat from where she’d set it inside and went out to meet the small determined vet.

“Carol! Looks like another good bunch!” Adalia commented, exiting her car, her medicine bag in tow. Carol nodded and gave her a quick hug before the two of them moved off to the corral.

For being so little Adalia could really demand attention. The petite brunette immediately took charge, telling the wranglers the order she wanted to view the horses in. After the last roundup the guys and girls assisting MLS were used to the intimidating bossy vet and quickly followed her instructions. It wasn’t too long before the first horse was sedated and in a small ring for Adalia to look her over.

One of the last horses to be examined was the grey mare with the bloody shoulder. As Adalia checked her heartbeat and felt her sides she suddenly paused and ran her hands back over the mare’s sides.

“What’s up?” Carol asked, concerned that the mare she was considering for MLS might be in any kind of trouble.

“Well, I’ll need to do a full work up to be sure but I think this gal here may be pregnant.”

Carol felt a thrill of excitement at that. She wondered if the sire could be the blood bay rabicano however she was a romantic at heart and the foal could be completely unrelated to any of the stallions they’d brought in.

“That’s wonderful!” She said aloud, “She’s one who will be staying with MLS so if you don’t mind I’ll put her in your capable hands.”

As Adalia continued checking the rest of the horses Carol once again spotted the rabicano stallion in the brush standing well away from the commotion near the stable. Something in her gut twisted and she decided that tonight she would take measures to try and catch the TFH stallion.

Please don't hate me. Yes I'm technically doing this out of order for my plot line as this is supposed to take place after Fawn is comfortable and settled at the stable. I just couldn't wait to introduce the two horses of my breed for my stable though!
